For the first time in 153 years, the ever-present Sweetheart Conversation Hearts will be on-mute this Valentine’s Day. Spanglar Candy recently purchased Sweethearts and Necco Wafers, but won’t have production ready for this year.

“We are particularly excited about the Sweethearts brand. Many people have memories of sorting through their box of Sweethearts to find just the right message to share,” said Spangler Chairman and CEO Kirk Vashaw in a news release from September.

Sweethearts were created in 1901 and known for sayings like “Be Mine” and “Cutie Pie.” Over the years, the phrases have changed with the times to feature “Text Me” and “Soul Mate.”
Look for them to return next year. In the meantime, Brach’s sells their own version of these hearts.
