Last Friday, Captain Kirk beamed into Nashville. William Shatner took the stage for the first time for the Grand Ole Opry radio show to sing from his new album of country songs. The country album, featuring Jeff Cook of the group Alabama was released last year and called “Why Not Me,” features songs like “Beam Me Up,” a nod to both Jim Beam Whiskey and Shatner’s catchphrase on Star Trek, “Too Old To Be Vegan” and “I Hate To Waste A Good Beer.”. The 87-year-old actor says that while he’s not a typical singer, he understands the musicality of language. Shatner has released several albums in the past and has plans to record a blues album next.
